Dynamic Kaleidoscope Card By Wendy Walters

Dynamic Kaleidoscope Card By Wendy Walters | Jamie Rodgers Crafts Blog

Hello Crafters.....

When I first saw the Kaleidoscope Segments Die Set, it bought back memories of when I was a child playing with my Kaleidoscope toy... and watching all of the beautiful patterns. This was my inspiration for this card creation.....

To begin, I cut out two of the die shapes; one to use as a complete pie, and the second to use with "a slice" cut out.

Next I used an 8x8 Pebble Grey Card Blank and trimmed the front flap by 1 1/2 cm.

I then took the kaleidoscope segment (the one with a slice missing) and embossed it with the Floral Delight Stencil.

The next stage was to create the whole pie.......

I took the Kaleidoscope Segments Stencil and lined it up on top of the whole pie.

TOP TIP - If you look at the stencil, the scalloped edge has been engraved onto the stencil, making it easy to line up.

I then took all the pie's stencil slices (all but one) and lined them within the Kaleidoscope Stencil.

📝 NOTE - Here I used stencil tape to make sure that they didn't move around, and to ensure that I kept each colour texture paste separate. (See photo 📸)

I carefully applied Gemstones Glitter Texture Paste in the following colours to my pie :- ▪️Aquamarine

▪️Violet Sapphire

▪️Larimer

▪️Pink Sapphire

▪️Amethyst

▪️Ruby Red

▪️Emerald Green

When I got to the final three segments, I left it for a while to dry, as I didn't want to risk smudging my segments with my hand as I was working!

Once set, I masked off the ones which I had done, and finished the circle

(see Picture below 📸)

From the same die set, I chose the corner with the flower in the middle and cut this out six times.

I glued two of these to the front left hand corners of the card blank.

I then opened the card up and glued two on the inside of the card on the righthand side.

Taking the remaining two, and with the card closed, I lined one up at a time over the right hand side. I lined them up with the ones underneath, noting where they hung over the edge of the card.

I added glue to the area that didn't over hang, and stuck it to the front of the card.

Once dried, I trimmed away the over hanging sections.

I cut out the Forget Me Not Flower and Gracious Leaves from the Florist Collection in Polar White Elite Card, which I then coloured them with Distress Oxide Inks.

For that beautiful sparkle, I added Diamond White Texture paste to the flowers using a paint brush and left to dry!

For a more authentic finish, I shaped them by curling them over the paint brush handle.

Next I need to find the centre of the Kaleidoscope....

I have a confession here - I do like measuring :-) I cut out an extra Kaleidoscope out so I could measure across.

I worked out that the half was at approx 8 1/2 cm,

I marked the point and kept moving the "pie" around; measuring and marking untill I ended up marking the same spot a few times.

Once I was happy that I had worked out how to find the centre, I then repeated this process with the back of my two "pies."

However, I did feel that I may need a little more support on the "full pie," as this was the one which was going to be the dynamic element and spun round.

With this in mind, I stuck a small piece of square card in the middle before marking the middle.

After finding the centres, I used a Pokey Tool to create a hole in both of them.

Now I needed to make a hole in the front of the card......

For this, I made a 'whole pie template.'

I put it on the front of the card, leaving just a little hanging over the edge, so it could easily be turned, marking it with a pencil.

I removed the "pie" and opened the card up, again using my Pokey Tool to make a hole.

I used a brad to fix the two Kaleidoscopes together; the embossed one on top of the other and then the whole one through the card.

TOP TIP - To hide the arms of the brad on the inside of the card, I cut a piece of Pebble Grey card 18.4 cm by 20cm and glued it over the top.

Us crafters know that nothing generally goes to plan lol....

When I tried moving the Kaleidoscope, I found that the top one moved a little, so I had then got to think of a way to hold it in place.

The solution.... I carefully glued the flowers on the top of the Kaleidoscope (not putting any glue near the edge), but adding some glue to some of the petals that hung over the edge, which I glued to the card blank. I then added my foliage.

When I had given it a little time for the glue to dry, I tried turning the Kaleidoscope again which worked well.. however, just to be safe, I glued a couple of the leaves to the card and the top of the Kaleidoscope as well :-)

For the all important sentiment......

I stamped the sentiment from the Lace Sentiments Stamp Set (Floral Lace Colllection) using the Black Panther Quick Dry Pigment Ink Pad

The final touch was to add some pearls to the centre of the flowers......

I hope this blog design has inspired you to create your own version; perfect for literally any occasion! If you have any questions, I'd love to hear from you in the comments.

Thanks & Best Wishes,

Wendy
